Bogus iPhone5 marketing emails are infecting thousands of computers with malware.
Cyber-criminals have been using the recent hype surrounding the new device to their advantage by spamming malware-ridden emails to thousands of inboxes.
The emails encourage readers to click on an image to find out more information about the new mobile phone. However, rather than reveal any details about the mobile phone, the link transports users to a malware download.
Zdnet.com report that the majority of the emails were sent yesterday ahead of a major announcement from Apple surrounding the iPhone5 today.
Although the scam has only targeted Windows users, the news still highlights the importance of all computer owners investing in high-quality IT management systems.
Writing for sophos.com, IT security expert Graham Cluley said it was common practice amongst cyber-criminals to try and exploit major technology announcements.
He said: "Apple product announcement are always big news and I think we have to accept that it's likely that whenever Apple is scheduled to reveal new technology that cybercriminals will try to exploit the interest.
"After all, we saw a very similar attack using an iPhone5 disguise during WWDC this year. On that occasion, it turned out that Apple didn't announce the iPhone 5, but the bad guys were still eager to take advantage of pre-announcement hype."
