An IT expert has urged companies to keep security issues at the forefront of their virtualisation plans, since cyber criminals may attack any organisation.

Writing for Management Today, Ross Wallace noted that such individuals are not "sizest", so professionals setting up remote systems management software at all sorts of firms could become a victim.

He stressed the importance of two-factor authentication, encryption and endpoint security, even if some of it may be time consuming.

Mr Wallace remarked: "Use a central management tool for security practices and policies in place that are system-wide, so you will be able to maximise the protection of your business data."

The industry source also recommended modernising the general infrastructure of a company and aligning management and IT departments when preparing to introduce virtualisation options.

He pointed out that huge cost savings can be achieved by adopting cloud storage and remote working technology, but accepted that some of the "lingo" used by IT experts can confuse people.

This week, Computer Weekly reported how an ex-employee of the US subsidiary of Japanese pharmaceutical firm Shionogi wreaked havoc on the company's network by logging in after he was made redundant.

One source told the publication that this is a perfect example of how vulnerable virtualisation systems can be and urged companies to revisit their security processes.
