London's growing green economy could swell to a massive £27 billion by April 2013, reports Business Green.
Low carbon and environmental services, like sustainable systems management software for businesses, are being earmarked as high-priority services for further investment after a four per cent growth in the sector during 2009 and 2010.
However, consultancy firm Innovas has highlighted areas where London is underperforming, such as "waste recovery and recycling, energy management and building technologies." Areas that are performing well are carbon finance, geothermal power, solar photovoltaics and waste management.
According to London Loves Business, London is ranked top of all UK regions in 13 of the 23 individual areas are part of the green economy.
London Mayor Boris Johnson expressed his delight at the growth: "The capital is already establishing as a leader in low carbon finance, and it is encouraging to see our city gathering strength in other significant areas of the green economy, such as renewable energy and low carbon building technologies.
"The focus of our programmes designed to improve London's environment and our quality of life, are helping to stimulate this growing sector of our economy, for example, our initiatives to retrofit tens of thousands of buildings with energy efficiency measures," he added.
