GoDaddy has announced that over 400 websites under its control were hacked last week.
Users of the popular web hosting company were shocked to find that visitors to their websites from certain search engines were being redirected to a domain containing malware.
According to spamfighter.com, cyber-criminals infiltrated a total of 445 GoDaddy accounts by using the correct usernames and passwords of the owners involved.
GoDaddy claims that it was unaware how the hackers got hold of the details but that the threat has now been appropriately dealt with.
The news highlights how even trusted websites can sometimes compromise the computers of visitors and shows why systems management software should be essential - for even the most careful web surfer.
Speaking to domainsdir.com, the company's chief information security officer, Todd Refoot, confirmed: "We are still investigating the issue, but so far our security team is confirming this was not an infrastructure breakdown and should not impact additional customers.
"We quickly removed the malicious code and went on to work to assist each of our customers to address the issue."
A statement from GoDaddy - which plays host to over 5 million domains all over the world - advised users to access their website via Google to ensure that their domain hasn't become victim of a similar attack.
