Infamous hacking group Lulzsec has laid claim to its biggest victim yet, the UK census.
In a statement released today on thenextweb.com, the group stated that it has gained access to the personal details of every single citizen who offered their personal details to the government earlier this year.
Lulzsec has warned that it will be releasing the data into the public sphere as soon as it has finished reformatting it. If the claims are true, this would arguably represent the biggest breach of personal security of all time.
Furthermore, it would certainly raise awareness of the need for IT system management software in order to help prevent computer networks from attacks such as these.
Rik Ferguson, who is a security director and industry expert, said that any leak of census data would be likely to spark a backlash against the government.
Speaking to SC Magazine, he said: "This could undermine the confidence of the nation and possibly others to hand over sensitive information to a civil service that has already once demonstrated their inability to encrypt or safeguard it."
The Office of National Statistics has stated that it is aware of LulzSec's claims and is currently investigating whether or not they have any substance.
