Police in Scotland have reportedly arrested the head of 'hacktivist' group Lulzsec, the so-called Topiary.
The group has put itself at the centre of a world-wide police investigation after high profile attacks on government and big business websites.
Despite the hacking, the group has maintained throughout that its intentions are good and it just wants to highlight the lacklustre security measures some networks have in place.
It is thought that the effect the group has had may have prompted many businesses to look at their own security measures and implement systems management software to help them if they became a target.
Now, however, it seems as though the authorities have taken the upper hand with the arrest of the man thought to be the Lulzsec leader.
Far from the Hollywood idea of hackers living in secret urban dens, Topiary was instead tracked to the remote Shetland Islands off Scotland's northern coast. It was there the 18-year-old was detained, before being readied to travel to London where he was to be questioned by Metropolitan Police.
A statement released by the police and printed on cnn.com reads: "The man arrested is believed to be linked to an ongoing international investigation into the criminal activity of the so-called 'hacktivist' groups Anonymous and Lulzsec."
The detained has yet to make a statement but in the past has claimed that arrests would not drive the group down, telling boston.com: "You cannot arrest an idea."
