99 per cent of enterprise networks have some sort of security gap in their IT security defences, according to new research.

A new paper published by FireEye Malware Intelligence Lab found that very few businesses were fully protected against malicious networks, despite many having invested in traditional defences like firewalls or anti-virus software.

It was found that there is plenty of advanced malware lurking around the internet, which continues to infect these businesses on an alarmingly regular basis. In fact, 80 per cent of enterprises are facing over 100 security alerts every single week.

Fireeye's CEO, Ashar Aziz, claimed that the paper highlights the importance of investing in additional network management software rather than relying on basic protection.

Speaking to marketwatch.com, he said: "The statistics in this report should be a wake-up call to enterprises. They need to closely examine their current IT defence perimeter and see if advanced malware is entering their networks unimpeded and determine if they need to add an extra layer of defence to cover this harmful and costly security gap."

SC Magazine report that 94 per cent of these malicious files were able to change their properties every 24 hours in order to avoid being detected.  It was also reported that over four-fifths of these files were being produced by the top 50 malware families.
