The Twitter account of PayPal UK has been hacked and used to post messages complaining about their service.

A series of tweets were released yesterday evening from the PayPal UK account encouraging followers to visit anti-Paypal site paypalsucks.com.

According to The Daily Mail, the account was also used to retweet any messages congratulating the hacker or slating the online payment service.

Although no customer's details were accessed, many users may be worried that the world's most popular online payment system has been the subject of a security breach.

Those who are worried about their own systems being compromised have been urged to invest in IT systems management software.

PayPal UK apologised to customers after regaining control of their Twitter account and was keen to point out that their Twitter account was run separately from any financial services they offer.

The hack comes just a day after hackers managed to infiltrate Fox News' Twitter feed and use it to spread false rumours about US President Barack Obama having been shot dead.

The security breaches have led many IT experts to question the security of Twitter and call for a more secure log-in system.

Writing for The Guardian, technology journalist Charles Arthur suggested that the website used a "two-factor authentication" process for certain high-profile accounts.
