Sony has taken the measure of locking 93,000 accounts on its Playstation Network service after unknown attackers attempted to sign-in to account without permission.

The attack - which used password and user ID combinations from an unidentified third-party source - succeeded in compromising the accounts.

However, no credit card details are thought to have been stolen, reports BBC News. It could, though, have been possible that unauthorised payments were made against the wallets of accounts; such as purchasing games, add-ons or other services available on the store.

Philip Reitinger, SVP & chief information security officer at Sony Group, has promised to restore money to the wallets of any users have been victim to fraudulent purchases on the Sony store.

This should come as a warning to other businesses - whether they are large corporations or small to medium enterprises - that adequate computer security on their network management software is essential in order to locate any intrusions on a network.

This is another blow for the Japanese giant after a plethora of attacks from hacktivist groups earlier in the year, leaving their Playstation Network service crippled for weeks on end. According to The Register, personal information on 77 million account holders was exposed as a result of the hack; including names, addresses, passwords and purchase histories.
