Targeted security attacks on the up

Data security attacks could become more targeted in the future, technology experts have warned.

Internet security specialists have warned web users to be vigilant and use up-to-date systems management software in order to protect themselves against the rising number of personal and tailored intrusion attempts.

Figures for 2010 have shown that cyber criminals are increasingly looking to target specific companies and their intellectual property, often with a specific end goal. In targeting big businesses as well as individuals, it was suggested, cyber criminals can launch a more targeted attack, and tailor their methods as a result, making for a much more accurate and dangerous campaign.

In a bid to combat more targeted attacks, security expert Frances deSouza has said that businesses should consider quality encryption software, especially if they are using the cloud. He told One Stop Click, "Encryption is the most important technology used to protect data stored in the cloud."

The comments come after a high-profile attack on the huge Sony Playstation network showed that all businesses, regardless of how big or small, could still be at risk.

Ian Shepherd, CEO of high street gaming retailer GAME told mcvuk.com what businesses should learn from the breach, suggesting that with so much data in one place, "subscription management, data security and all of those things [should] come much to the fore."

"And that is something the games industry at large needs to take stock of and really give some thought to."
