The Linux Foundation has been forced to temporarily shut down all its websites after an attack by unidentified cyber-criminals.
It is thought that hackers gained access to a large database of users' email addresses and passwords and other potentially sensitive information during the security breach which was discovered on September 8.
Linux have announced that they are currently working on improving their website's security before its pages are available once on the web once again. They have advised all users to change their passwords if they had been reused on other websites.
A statement by the company, cited by itpro.co.uk, said: "We are in the process of restoring services in a secure manner as quickly as possible. As with any intrusion and as a matter of caution, you should consider the passwords and SSH keys that you have used on these compromised.
"If you have reused these passwords on other sites, please changes them immediately."
The hack of such a high profile IT company highlights the need for businesses of all sizes to invest in high quality systems management software.
Theinquirer.net report that the security breach is thought to be linked with the hack of Linux-owned website kernel.org, which took place earlier this month.
