Virgin Media has had to make an embarrassing call to its clients, telling them how they may be infected with a virus.

In association with SOCA (Serious Organised Crime Agency), Virgin Media has written to warn 1,500 of its customers how they may be infected with a Trojan horse virus that could steal bank details and other such passwords.

The letter informed the users of the situation and also contained instructions on how to remove the SpyEye Trojan from their systems. In this case, the virus only attacks Microsoft Windows operating systems.

This recent development further reinforces the point that IT management software should be used by all net users not just owners of big businesses and large networks.

Speaking to BBC News, a Virgin Media spokesperson claimed: "It's a small number compared to the four million customers we have, but regardless of that, because of the seriousness it's still important to communicate with our customers.

"The category we are looking at are the ones that put our customers at most risk or the ones that will steal from them."

Adding, Virgin Media's executive director of broadband Jon James told The Telegraph: "Cybercrime is on the rise and the increasing sophistication of malware infections mean that all internet users could be at risk with devastating effects."
