Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has revealed the new version of Windows 8 is set for release in 2012.

Computer World reports that Ballmer made the announcement to an audience of software developers in Tokyo. While industry insiders had been expecting the next iteration of Windows to be released in 2012, this is the first time the firm have confirmed their intentions to release next year.

As with any new programs, firms must make sure their current software, like automated IT management systems, will be compatible with future releases like Windows 8.

Until then, Microsoft expects to sell more than 350 million copies of Windows 7 this year, and the company has traditionally relied on new version of its operating system to spur sales.

The official Microsoft website has a transcript of Ballmer's speech, where he states: "As we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there's a whole lot more coming.

As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors," he added.

More details could be unveiled at California's upcoming 'D: All Things Digital' conference where Microsoft's Windows division president, Steven Sinofsky, is to speak.
