After the crippling downtime of the Sony Playstation Network by hackers, forensics experts have pointed the finger at infamous hacktivists Anonymous, The Register confirmed.

Experts investigating the breach discovered a file titled 'Anonymous' and the phrase "We are Legion," the company's chairman told members of congress.

Sony Chairman Kazuo Hirai revealed the details in a letter to the US House of Representatives, used to support the notion that hacker collective Anonymous was behind the attacks.

The letter from Sony stated: "Just weeks before, several Sony companies had been the target of a large-scale, coordinated denial of service attack by the group called Anonymous."

"The attacks were coordinated against Sony as a protest against Sony for exercising its rights in a civil action in the United States District Court in San Francisco against a hacker," it added.

"Whether those who participated in the denial of service attacks were conspirators or whether they were simply duped into providing cover for a very clever thief, we may never know."

The breach of Sony's network highlights the incredible importance of smaller firms implementing solid IT management software in order to protect personal and valuable data. Solid anti-virus, firewalls and anti-malware will protect against most viruses and attacks against SMEs.

This followed news that Sony confirmed the details of 25 million people were taken in a 'second' attack, taking the total affected past 100 million, next-gen.biz reported.
